How to talk about autism to young people and Q&A

2 April, 2021 @ 13:00 14:30

What is the best way to talk about autism to young people? How can you support young people who hate their diagnosis to change perspective?

I am Andy, the inclusion ambassador/ SEND Advocate at Bury Council. My role is about prioritising the views of SEND young people across Bury, in addition to being co-chair of the North West SEND Young People’s Coproduction Network.

A common question I am asked is whether you should tell children they are autistic, and if you decide to, what the best way is to do it.

Autistic young people have shared their experiences of the diagnostic process and finding out they are autistic, and I also have lived experience as an autistic adult.

For Word Autism Awareness Day, I wanted to share some key conisderations and top tips for helping autistic children to understand and accept their differences.

The first hour will be a presentation, but this will be followed by a 30 minute Q&A. You are welcome to stay for as little or as long as you like!
